GIG -- The last number that we recorded was again one of the best we had ... "There's Within My Heart A Melody." I still get a thrill when listening to this one.

Trombone Trio - The Fight Is On
GIG -- A lively number "The Fight Is On" (Oh Christian Soldier) was a hot number we enjoyed doing. What made the Trombone Trio music so rewarding was that we did all of the arrangements (including the variations, transitions, introductions and endings) that characterized them all.
A great example of this can be seen and heard in clicking on the following:

Trombone Trio - The Unveiled Christ
GIG -- One of the lesser known but favorite hymns of ours was "The Unveiled Christ." It recounted that horrible and yet wonderful day at Calvary when the veil of the Temple was torn in two as Christ was crucified.

We Even Sang A Little Bit Too
GIG -- Ralph and you and I sang a little bit together (as well as tooted our horns). I believe you got the solo on this Chorus Medley when we got to "I Know De Lawd."

More Out West With The President
GIG -- Another thing that we did to appeal to the young people was to stand in a triangle, take another guy's slide instead of our own, and play a slow number. Quite often the number chosen was "What A Wonderful Savior." That was the one we used in Dodge City, Kansas.
While we were on the way home, we asked Dr. Witmer if there was anything we could do to improve our ministry. He was very complimentary ... said "No, I really appreciate what you were doing and how you were doing -- OH, WAIT A MINUTE. When were were in Dodge City, Kansas and I was in the Pastor's Office getting ready for the evening service, one of the songs you played didn't quite measure up to the quality of the other songs you had played."
We said, "Was it 'WHAT A WONDERFUL SAVIOR'"? "That was the one ... yet it was" he told us. We explained to him that this was the number we took each others' slides while we played that number.
Now it was his turn. He had not seen it happen and he refused to believe that we could do that. We tried all the way back home to convince him but we were unable.
I guess that made things even for the rabbit-shooting incident we "failed" to believe.

Out West with the President
GIG -- I remember while we were out West traveling with President S. A. Witmer during the Easter Recess. We stayed at a farm house with him and when he was looking for a little exercise he asked them if they had a gun he could borrow.
They gave him a rifle and he wandered out in the field just looking around. We all stood at the kitchen window watching him. All of a sudden he raised the rifle, took aim in a sweeping motion and fired the gun. A rabbit was bounding across the field and he hit that thing in the head while it was on the run.
We couldn't believe what we saw! Then the wrung the head off the rabbit and proudly walked back to the farm house to show us his prize.
I said, "Watch this!" When he came in the house to show us the headless rabbit, I said "What wolf's mouth did you grab that rabbit out of?" "No, no," he said ... "I shot that rabbit in the head while it was on the run, killed it, and wrung the head off of it before I brought it in."
We all laughed at him like we could not believe it. He tried the rest of the trip to convince us that he shot that rabbit on the run, and we didn't let him know we knew it all the time!
What a great trip that was with the President of the College.

Trombone Trio - Christ For Me

Trombone Trio - Love Lifted Me
GIG -- Remember the "knuckle-busters" we used to do with one guy standing on a chair pointing his slide down, another guy pointing his slide into the first guy's slide, and the third guy pointing his slide into the second guy's slide?
No wonder we called those the "knuckle-buster" songs ... the fast ones where we really had to keep our slide going! I believe "Love Lifted Me" was one of the numbers we did with that trick.

TROMBONE TRIO
Gig -- The rest of the story ...
We asked Ira Gerig to give us a bombastic introduction to "God Of Our Fathers" which was the number we were going to play.
He did exactly that going on and on and on before it seemed he was ending his introduction. We snapped up our trombones in readiness to hit the first notes ... and then he rambled on again. We dropped our trombones down in confusion and waited for his introduction to be concluded.
He did that to us three times before he concluded this bombastic introduction, and then we hit our notes together ... duhhhhh ... duh duh duh ... duh ... duh ... duh ... duh ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT HE HAD DELIBERATELY LEFT THE INTRODUCTION IN A KEY WE WERE NOT GOING TO PLAY IN!
What a character he was (beside being one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever known). When they were expecting their first baby, he announced that they were going to name him "Buford Pugh." Then when he came home at night, he was going to walk in and say, "Buford .... PU!!!).

TROMBONE TRIO
Remember when? 1949 ... 1950 ... 1951 -- Three fellows who loved music and played trombones got together to form the Trombone Trio in college (Taylor University Fort Wayne).
Gerald Gerig, Nelson Chamberlin and Ralph Ogden came together in a fascinating way to arrange and play their own musical arrangements of Gospel Hymns.
In 1949 they were assigned to various concerts in Indiana and Gerald Gerig was their featured speaker.
In 1950 they were assigned as Field Representatives for the College and extended their concerts into Canada (Frank Logsden's Toronto Baptist Church) for a week, and other prime concerts. Occasionally Professor Dr. Ira Gerig served as their accompanist, but La Donna Sprunger moved in to become their regular accompanist during that year.
In 1951 they traveled 38 of the 40 weekends in the school year performing as many as six concerts on a weekend. They traveled with the College President (Dr. Safara A. Witmer) out West and performed concerts during the Easter Recess in Kansas and elsewhere.
Many of their concerts were fashioned for young people who might be thinking about going to college. Some of the unusual things they did was:
1. Stand in a triangle and play a number holding and operating each others' slides rather than their own.
2. Stand one trombonist on a chair with his slide pointing straight down; stand another with his slide pointing inside the trombone pointing down; and stand the third trombonist pointing his slide inside the second trombonist's slide ... and together they would play a fast number (called a knuckle-buster).
